Weekly Programming

Year round Navigating Youth Through

Phase 1 (Weeks 1-6):

Participants embark on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth, focusing on nurturing intrinsic motivation. Through interactive sessions, they uncover passions, strengths, and values, cultivating resilience and self-awareness.

Phase 2 (Weeks 7-12):

Building upon the foundation of intrinsic motivation, participants shift to external motivation and application. They learn practical skills, set achievable goals, and develop confidence through teamwork and real-world problem-solving exercises.

Phase 3 (Weeks 13-16):

In the final four weeks, participants apply their knowledge and skills in a cumulative project. Working collaboratively, they address meaningful issues within their schools or communities, becoming agents of change and making a tangible impact on the world around them.

Programs like ours, with modules focusing on empathy, family, and mental health, are vital for youth in North Dakota and Minnesota, where 1 in 5 students grapple with mental health issues. By addressing conflict resolution, cultural misunderstandings, and societal issues, we empower students to navigate challenges effectively. In doing so, we reduce stigma and promote a supportive environment where teens feel comfortable seeking help. This fosters resilience and equips them with crucial coping strategies, ensuring they have the tools to thrive academically and emotionally.

Pipeline to Professions for all youth.

At Umoja, we foster a pipeline to professions through a representation model that puts students in the driver's seat. Our program includes college interns who have attended the same schools as the students we serve.

We offer opportunities for students to showcase their work, ranging from public performances to teaching college students wellness and creating films or planning events. By providing students with the tools they need to become professionals and entrepreneurs, we empower them to reach their full potential.

Additionally, Umoja collaborates with organizations to provide youth with pathways to professions. Last year, a student won a $5,000 grant to create a Juneteenth film. Over 80 youths have been paid for showcasing their talents in poetry, painting, and 3D printing. Notably, 15 state athletes have utilized their skills to earn income. Engagements such as visits to Prairie Public Radio or tours to North Dakota State University have inspired many students to pursue lifelong careers, even those who hadn't previously considered it.
